Why should I care if my food is organic ?

Eating organic food allows you to reduce your exposure to pesticides. Conventionally grown food is filled with pesticide residue. Research shows that even low-level exposure to pesticides can increase the risk of cancer, damage nervous systems, and decrease fertility. Children and pregnant and nursing women are especially vulnerable.

Some studies indicate that organic food is actually more nutritious. This makes sense because organic farming continually feeds rich organic matter into the soil while industrial farming destroys micro-nutrients.

Eating organic food protects you from Genetically Modified foods. GMOs are banned in organic food but are common in regular foods in your grocery store.

Organic farming reduces or eliminates off-farm pollution of water sources. Industrial farming produces chemical and animal effluent which leaches into rivers, streams and aquifers destroying water quality for everyone.

Organic farming builds soil rather than depleting it. Industrial farming practices are slowly but surely destroying the precious soil we have.

Organic farming uses less fossil fuels. Organic farming uses green manures, crop covers and often hand weeding and harvesting. Industrial farming relies entirely on oil-based chemical inputs such as synthetic fertilizers and herbicides and on oil-guzzling machine power.

Organic farming protects farm workers. A study found that farmers exposed to herbicides had a six times greater risk of contracting cancer than non-farmers.
